The island is the working centre of this Pukekohe kitchen. Rather than existing simply because the room could fit one, the split-height design combines preparation, washing, casual seating and a lower serving surface in one element. The long rear wall then keeps cooking, appliances and storage together in a defined run. This division allows the island to connect the kitchen with the living area while still earning the floor space it occupies through several practical jobs.
