VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are substances that can be released into indoor air from certain finishes, adhesives, and manufactured materials. In a kitchen, this matters because it is a high-usage family space where children spend time daily. Our approach is practical: we reduce avoidable exposure by prioritising lower-emission choices where documentation is available, and by reviewing the finish system rather than relying on “marketing claims”.
They are commonly used emission classes for engineered wood products. Different test methods can express results in different units, so the key is not the label itself. The key is whether the supplier provides a document that clearly states the product range, test method, and the declared emission class. Where applicable, we record the emission class and store the supporting documents in your project record.
The New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) does not certify products directly. Instead, its Green Star and Homestar rating tools recognise certain third-party ecolabels and documented material attributes, which can contribute to project credits when used with the correct supporting evidence.
Eco Choice Aotearoa is New Zealand Government’s official ecolabel. It independently certifies products and services that meet high environmental standards. Where relevant product ranges carry Eco Choice certification, this can also support building rating pathways such as Homestar and Green Star, which recognise certain third-party ecolabels.
Formaldehyde is widely discussed in indoor air quality because it can cause irritation at higher concentrations, and major authorities classify it as carcinogenic to humans under certain exposure conditions. We do not provide medical advice. We treat it as an exposure management topic, and we prefer materials with clearer emission documentation rather than undocumented imports.
FSC is a forestry and chain-of-custody certification. It helps verify responsible sourcing and traceability of timber fibre, which supports New Zealand’s forestry economy and long-term resource stewardship. It is not, by itself, an indoor air emission certificate.
For us, NZ Sourced is mainly about reliability and accountability. NZ-based supply generally makes it easier to verify documentation, re-request information later, and access clearer replacement pathways if something needs to match years down the track. This reduces uncertainty for families, and it also supports local industry capability and jobs, which is part of New Zealand’s long-term green transition.
We do not claim a universal number because footprint depends on product type, distance, and freight method. What we can control is avoiding unnecessary long-haul transport loops where feasible. Shorter supply chains often reduce freight variables and support a more resilient, locally anchored supply system.
